Alternative Human Interface Devices for Lighting Control Systems - A Grad Project
May 31, 2026
For my grad project I want to focus primarily on my love for lighting, specifically programming and the technology behind consoles. I initially considered trying to develop my own console. As much as it would have been fun, interesting and incredibly useful, I thought I should scale back and focus on something that was a little more in scope for a grad project. This is where I decided to focus on the part of the console I have to deal with the most.. Its interface!
This is the introduction to my grad project where I explore various alternative input devices and control methods for lighting control. Alongside this I experimented and researched different protocols and file formats used in the world of lighting (Such as sACN, OSC, MIDI, HTTP, USB, .MVR files), drawing on my lighting knowledge, electronic theory, and software development skills.
My project also looks as the history of lighting control, devices used in other industries, and impacts on accessibility.
